Salisbury is the only city in Wiltshire and is home to some of the most historic landmarks in England. These include the world-famous and truly epic Stonehenge, situated on the spreading Salisbury Plain, and the enormous Salisbury Cathedral, which is regarded as one of the finest medieval cathedrals in the United Kingdom and was built around 800 years ago.

This is still a very lively city, with regular markets being staged in the city twice a week for more than 600 years. Surrounding architecture includes a multitude of black and white timber-framed buildings, while the city centre itself is based around Market Square and the very prominent Guildhall. Located just behind the Guildhall, on Fish Row, is the Salisbury Tourist Information Centre, where tourism leaflets are readily available, outlining appealing walking trails over the water meadows, with well-placed vantage points for stunning cathedral views.




There are a wide variety of Salisbury hotels and accommodation available in central and the surrounding area, making this historic Wiltshire city an accessible holiday destination for every pocket. These cultural attractions include the Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum - situated in the Cathedral Close, including an award-winning, redesigned Stonehenge gallery, the Monkton Deverill gold torc and many excellent paintings; the Wardrobe Military Museum - housing the museum of the Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment; Mompesson House - over 300 years, a historic building and an excellent example of Queen Anne architecture; the Medieval Hall - a magnificent 13th-century banqueting hall featuring a museum area; the Wilton Carpet Factory- with interesting exhibits and displays about 300 years of Wilton and Axminster carpet making; and the Salisbury Arts Centre - with regular theatrical performances, dance, music, family shows, workshops and art exhibits in the gallery area.

The grand city of Salisbury is a prosperous and very attractive city, with no sprawling suburbs or high-rise buildings to compete with Salisbury Cathedral's towering spire, which is impressively the tallest in Britain. Instead, the city is overflowing with beautiful and historic buildings, including many fine Tudor houses. This is an excellent base for visiting tourist attractions throughout Wiltshire and also for tourist excursions to the nearby Dorset coast.
