Salisbury Information and Salisbury Tourism
(Salisbury, Wiltshire, England, UK)
Salisbury is the only city in Wiltshire and is home to some of the most historic landmarks in England. These include the world-famous and truly epic Stonehenge, situated on the spreading Salisbury Plain, and the enormous Salisbury Cathedral, which is regarded as one of the finest medieval cathedrals in the United Kingdom and was built around 800 years ago.
This is still a very lively city, with regular markets being staged in the city twice a week for more than 600 years. Surrounding architecture includes a multitude of black and white timber-framed buildings, while the city centre itself is based around Market Square and the very prominent Guildhall. Located just behind the Guildhall, on Fish Row, is the Salisbury Tourist Information Centre, where tourism leaflets are readily available, outlining appealing walking trails over the water meadows, with well-placed vantage points for stunning cathedral views.
There are a wide variety of Salisbury hotels and accommodation available in central and the surrounding area, making this historic Wiltshire city an accessible holiday destination for every pocket. Salisbury accommodation ranges from grand historic luxury hotels to award-winning bed and breakfast guest houses, often located within characterful medieval Tudor buildings. There are also cheap inns, travelodges, farmhouses, and even nearby caravan parks and campsites, in neighbouring villages such as Berwick St. James, Landford, Netherhampton and Sixpenny Handley. Whatever the budget, the grand city of Salisbury has plenty of hotels to suite everyone.
Salisbury has a enormous range of tourist attractions to offer visitors to this part of Wiltshire and these include Old Sarum Castle - an enormous Iron Age hillfort of Old Salisbury which became a medieval settlement, and now contains the ancient ruins of a large castle; Old Wardour Castle - famous for its battle in 1643, when Parliamentarian forces took control of this fortress; the Rockbourne Roman Villa - the largest and most ancient villa in the area, including a nearby modern museum, with a number of interesting exhibits; Stourhead House and Gardens - featuring some of the most spectacular landscaped gardens in the west country; and the City Hall Entertainment Centre - a large entertainment complex in the city centre, with regular national shows, local events and festivals, exhibitions, lectures and concerts. More information on Salisbury Tourist Attractions and Salisbury Landmarks.
There are also a number of excellent museums and art galleries in the city, providing interesting information on the history of Salisbury and other areas of Wiltshire. These cultural attractions include the Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum - situated in the Cathedral Close, including an award-winning, redesigned Stonehenge gallery, the Monkton Deverill gold torc and many excellent paintings; the Wardrobe Military Museum - housing the museum of the Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment; Mompesson House - over 300 years, a historic building and an excellent example of Queen Anne architecture; the Medieval Hall - a magnificent 13th-century banqueting hall featuring a museum area; the Wilton Carpet Factory- with interesting exhibits and displays about 300 years of Wilton and Axminster carpet making; and the Salisbury Arts Centre - with regular theatrical performances, dance, music, family shows, workshops and art exhibits in the gallery area.
The grand city of Salisbury is a prosperous and very attractive city, with no sprawling suburbs or high-rise buildings to compete with Salisbury Cathedral's towering spire, which is impressively the tallest in Britain. Instead, the city is overflowing with beautiful and historic buildings, including many fine Tudor houses. This is an excellent base for visiting tourist attractions throughout Wiltshire and also for tourist excursions to the nearby Dorset coast.
